Lowry seems to have been from a working class background like me. He seemed like a person out of place and time and I often feel like that. He struggled with social relationships - like me. He was obsessively independent and despite all of this seemed to have a sense of fun. O - and unfashionable.
Lowry hasn't influenced my paintings - but all of the above things that I share with him may have. His response to the way he felt seemed to be to live alone and lock himself away from the world and paint. In a sense, mine is much less easy - I engage with people, in fact am probably seen as quite sociable. But...
And how does his work relate to yours? inspire you? have relevance for you? have relevance for people in similar environments?
